Semi-online scheduling with decreasing job sizes

چکیده
We investigate the problem of semi-online scheduling jobs on m identical parallel machines where the jobs arrive in order of decreasing sizes. We present a complete solution for the preemptive variant of semi-online scheduling with decreasing job sizes. We give matching lower and upper bounds on the competitive ratio for any xed number m of machines; these bounds tend to 1 2 (1+ p 3) 1:36603, as the number of machines goes to innnity. Our results are also best possible for randomized algorithms. For the non-preemptive variant of semi-online scheduling with decreasing job sizes, a result of Graham SIAM J. Appl. Math. 17(1969), 263{269] yields a (4 3 ? 1 3m) competitive deterministic non-preemptive algorithm. For m = 2 machines, we prove that this algorithm is best possible (it is 7 6 competitive). For m = 3 machines we give a lower bound of (1 + p 37)=6 1:18046. Finally, we present a randomized non-preemptive 8 7-competitive algorithm for m = 2 machines and prove that this is optimal.

Semi-online scheduling for jobs with release times
In this paper we consider three semi-online scheduling problems for jobs with release times on m identical parallel machines. The worst case performance ratios of the LS algorithm are analyzed. The objective function is to minimize the maximum completion time of all machines, i.e. the makespan. If the job list has a nondecreasing release times, then 2− 1 m is the tight bound of the worst case p...

We study semi-online scheduling with a reordering buffer for identical parallel machines. In this problem, jobs arrive one by one and the online algorithm is equipped with a buffer of limited size, which can be used to reorder the jobs when making scheduling decisions. When the buffer is full, one of the jobs in the buffer must be irrevocably assigned to a machine before the next job can be rev...
متن کاملOnline Scheduling of Jobs for D-benevolent instances On Identical Machines
We consider online scheduling of jobs with specic release time on m identical machines. Each job has a weight and a size; the goal is maximizing total weight of completed jobs. At release time of a job it must immediately be scheduled on a machine or it will be rejected. It is also allowed during execution of a job to preempt it; however, it will be lost and only weight of completed jobs contri...
متن کاملAn Efficient Bi-objective Genetic Algorithm for the Single Batch-Processing Machine Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Time and Non-identical Job Sizes
This paper considers the problem of minimizing make-span and maximum tardiness simultaneously for scheduling jobs under non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependentfamily setup time on the single batch- processor, where split size of jobs is allowed between batches. At first, a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed for t...
متن کاملSemi-online scheduling revisited
Makespan minimization onm identical machines is a fundamental scheduling problem. The goal is to assign a sequence of jobs, each specified by a processing time, to parallel machines so as to minimize the maximum completion time of any job. Deterministic online algorithms achieve a competitive ratio of about 1.92. Due to this relatively high competitiveness and the lack of progress in the area o...
